Welcome to Samurai Judo and Jujitsu, located in the Harbor City Dojo building at 1827 Harbor City Blvd, Melbourne, FL 32901. Thank you for stopping by!

The aim of Samurai Judo and Jujitsu is to help all students attain their goals, whether that is learning the best possible self defense, becoming a competitive athlete or simply to enjoying Judo and Jujitsu for recreational purposes. We train young, old and in between and you can start at any fitness level. In fact, if you are out of shape, Judo and Jujitsu are great ways to exercise - working cardio and strengthening muscles at the same time.

Both Judo and Jujitsu are widely practiced martial arts founded in Japan. Here at SJJ we train traditional Judo and Jujitsu for children and adults, while still keeping a fun and family atmosphere. During our Family Judo classes, parents are encouraged to join their kids to learn Judo, although it is not required. Family Judo is a great way for parents and kids to interact and get in shape together. We also offer adults only Judo and Jujitsu, which allows adults and teens to practice at a level they desire without worrying about the little ones on the mat. All classes are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with some special events and clinics occasionally on weekends. See our schedule and our new and future students sections for more in depth information.

Samurai Judo and Jujitsu has a large mat space with padded edges for the safest possible practice environment. We have high level instructors, including a Pan American Judo Confederation Referee and a 7th Dan (7th degree black belt) in both Judo and Jujitsu, as well as several others with extensive competitive experience. We are recognized by all the national organizations: The United States Judo Association, The United States Jujitsu Federation and USA Traditional Kodokan Judo as well as Florida Judo, Inc.

What is Judo?: There is too much that can be said about Judo to put in a single paragraph, or even really a single book. However, we will attempt to give you a brief run down here. Judo was developed from Jujitsu by Doctor Jigoro Kano in 1882. It is an effective martial art, but it is also an Olympic sport. Judo was the first martial art included in the Olympics, with the first games held in 1964. Judo is the second most practiced sport in the world, behind only soccer in its popularity. Judo incorporates Nage Waza (throwing techniques), Katame Waza (pins, chokes and joint locks) and Atemi Waza (striking techniques, used in kata) into effective use. It might surprise you to learn that Judo is so effective that it can be seen many places outside of the Judo dojo. It is used by stunt people in multitudes of movies and is commonly seen in mixed martial arts competitions.

What is Jujitsu?: If you are interested in self defense, we recommend you include both Judo and Jujitsu in your training. Jujitsu is self defense for real life situations. Our techniques are designed to be maximally effective with a minimum of training and effort in order to equip our students with the tools they need to survive as soon as possible. Jujitsu includes foot and hand strikes, throws, joint locks, chokes, weapons techniques (both conventional and improvised) and ground fighting (grappling) techniques. Our techniques work by exploiting the inherent weaknesses found in the human body and by turning the strength of an attacker upon him or herself. Jujitsu is often considered to be one of the more well-rounded martial arts.
